HAPPY NEW YEAR!
The course was closed over the Christmas period because of the freezing conditions, but in the last few weeks with the rise in temperatures the course was open for nine hole competitions. All players remarked on the good condition of the course after all the snow and frost. Unfortunately, only casual golf was played on Sunday 31 January 2010 again because of the frosty conditions. The weather for the coming week looks pretty good. So here’s hoping.
Spring League
This competition starts shortly. Simply enter your name in the Competition Book at the bar, pay your €4 entry fee and away you go. You can enter as often as you like. Competition starts on a Monday and finishes on a Friday. Weekends are excluded. Good luck.
Golf Professional
The Club is at an advanced stage of hiring a professional as the position has been advertised with the PGA. Interviews will be held over the coming weeks. The Professional will operate from the Driving Range so this is an exciting development.
Club Table Quiz
The table Quiz was held on Friday the 30 January 2010 and was a huge success. 25 teams took part and a good night’s craic was had by all. John Simpson’s team were the overall winners with a whooping 95 points out of a possible 100. Well done John. Dick Burke’s team came second with 90 points. Poor Dick fell down on the question about Bank of Ireland shares. Better luck next time Dick. Part of the raffle money was donated to the Haiti Earthquake Fund. Many thanks to the organising committee of Niall Gilmartin, Anthony Downey, Thomas Cunningham and myself.
Vincent Duffy
Poor Vincent has been struggling with his golf for a few years but, recently this has all changed. Vincy came second in a Monday competition in Dundalk Golf Club. Over the festive season Vincy decided to grow a beard and he attributes his recent success to his new ‘Santa Appearance’ which gives him more balance while driving and putting. On Friday night at the table Quiz I noticed at one stage that Jim Hanratty (Past President) and Shem Whelan (Vice Captain) were in deep conversation and they both agreed that they would ditch their razors for the sake of better golf. So look out for a few more Grizzly Adam look-alikes about the course in the coming weeks.
Captains Drive In
The next exciting event will be Lady Captain Margaret Burke and Gents Captain Anthony Downey drive in on Sunday 28th February 2010. Good luck to both of them. It will be interesting to see what mode of transport they will use to make their grand entrance. What about parachuting in Anthony?
Good Golfing
