MANNAN CASTLE GOLF ACADEMY
The inaugural Mannan Castle Juvenile Academy was a huge success and all the youngsters who took part had a ball of a time. The Academy was run over four days (5 July, 2011 – 8 July, 2011) and was exceptionally well run according to the parents. Over 50 boys and girls took part and they were divided into different categories according to their golfing ability (absolute beginner to those with some golfing experience). The four different categories were supervised by a female leader and the children were brought to different parts of the golf course.
Putting The person in charge of this area had up to four helpers and each adult was able to give instruction to 3 or 4 juveniles for an hour. Competitions were run and the children thoroughly enjoyed these and a small token was given as a prize. The children were very lucky as they could putt on the state of the art putting which is up to the highest PGA standard.
Driving Range Instruction was given by our Resident Professional Mr. Kevin McGivern in this area on the first day of the academy. Distance markers and different obstacles were set up so that the children could hone their driving skills. Again this area was supervised by up to five helpers at any one time, who offered help and guidance to our young aspiring golfers.
Pitching Green This area was supervised by the young golfers of Mannan Castle and the children took to this like a duck to water. Bunker play, flop shots and overhead flop shots were the order of the day. Some of the shots the juveniles could perform after only a few minutes tuition had to be seen to be believed.
Mini Golf Area This is a new addition to the facilities at Mannan Castle. It consists of 6 par three holes and is in immaculate condition. This area was supervised by up to 6 of our more senior members at any one time. The senior members thoroughly enjoyed showing the youngsters there vast array of skills garnered over the years. There were almost a few holes in one and this was a sight to behold.
The children were provided with a snack mid-morning and lunch each day superbly cooked by Jean in the kitchen. This gave the kids a chance to compare notes especially the tips that the seniors gave them.
Saturday 9 July, 2011 will be the Adult/Juvenile Competition played over 10 holes followed by a barbeque and music. Some of the youngsters put the adults to shame with their golfing prowess. The juvenile committee which to thank all those who helped in any way, especially the senior members, younger members of Mannan, Green keeper Donal and his staff, Finbarr and the bar staff, Jean and the kitchen staff and those who helped in any way. “Brilliant, fantastic, best time of my life” were some of the comments made by the participants on the final day of the Academy. Next year’s will be bigger and better.
