Ladies News
5th February 2012
Ladies News We all know the dimpled ball just doesn’t go as far this time of year when the air is cold, it stops where it lands, there is no run on the ball and sometimes finding it can be fun. Apparently conditions were just perfect for Rita O’Loughlin who brought in a fantastic 26pts to take the lead from her friend Angela McBride who was the clubhouse leader with 24pts.
Week 2 (13 Hole) Competition Wednesday Feb 1st 1st Rita O’Loughlin (15) 26pts 2nd Angela Mc Bride (24) 24pts
The Spring League Board is posted in the Cashell Room, at a first glance I thought the teams were themed after a great Simon & Garfunkel song “Scarborough Fair” as we have team Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme…but alas we have too many teams for that to work and teams Chive and Dill were added! It’s too early to forecast a winning team but all teams look to be full of enthusiastic players, it’s important to get out and play every week as but four scores count every week. If there is time available on the timesheet, you can now play the Spring League on a Saturday. Don’t forget you can also stay up to date with our news on Mannan Castle Ladies Facebook page.
Men’s News Unfortunately at time of print the men’s results were not available due to a computer glitch. Members can check the results on the Men’s Notice Board or on our website page.
Mannan Club News Hopefully the weather permits the Criss-Cross Repeater to kick off this week, this repeater competition is an Open Repeater to men and women as we are a progressive club we do not discriminate, I hope to see a few ladies participate in this fun competition which starts at €3 for members, for more information call Kevin McGivern our Professional at 042 9663308.
I bet you didn’t know that our bar manager Finbar is a romantic at heart! Well he’s the driving force behind the Valentines Weekend Table Quiz, a table of 4 for €20, Friday February 10th at 9pm, now we’ve been promised a few love related questions. Everyone welcome to this fun night.
When it comes to area Golf Clubs, MannanCastle is still the best deal in town. We reward our loyal members, so if you’ve been a member for 3 years or more your yearly membership is €660, even if you left for a few years and decide to come back, check out the deals on our web-site http://www.mannancastlegolfclub.ie If you have any questions call Kevin or Finbar at 042 966 3308. This year our competition entry fees have been reduced across the board.
One thing I’ve noticed over the last year is that our young guns with the single digit handicaps seem to spend quite a bit of time in the practice area, perhaps the rest of us should learn from them. Especially since our practice facilities are second to none, a 6 hole pitch & putt practice area, two putting greens and a driving range, so there’s no excuse for us not to hone our golf skills, we now have our own on-site professional Kevin who is always ready to help with very reasonable rates for lessons.
It’s only a few of weeks to our Captain’s Drive-In, Captain Shane Corr and Lady Captain Ann Connolly are a planning a grand entrance on February 26th.

29th January 2012
Normally the Spring League does not have a good attendance rate, but this year we have had great interest with almost 40 ladies signed up, the teams have been drawn, check the board in the clubhouse to see whose team you are on. Its €3 to play and you repeat as often as you like, hopefully the weather continues to co-operate.
In conjunction with the Spring League, we also have a weekly 13 hole competition, last Wednesday was not a very nice golf day and nearly everyone who played got soaked; but a little rain and gale force winds didn’t bother Denise McGuinness who scored a fantastic 26pts in horrendous conditions, one can only imagine the scores she’s capable of bringing in when the weather improves.
Spring League Weekly Competition Week 1 1st Denise McGuinness (34) 26pts
Don’t forget to check out the great deals that Kevin has in the Proshop at the moment!
A reminder to everyone that there will be a Table Quiz in the clubhouse Friday February 10th; the theme for this quiz is “Romance & Love” since it’s the weekend before Valentines Day, everyone is welcome to this fun event!

Arnmore Alliance was hosted in Clones last Monday, Mannan Castle ladies featured in the prizes, and well done to Clones on providing an excellent array of prizes. Congratulations to all the winners, but especially our girls who all played extremely well… 1st Gill Rouiller 2nd Mary MacNamee 5th Nuala Mulholland
The Spring League has officially started, so it’s time to get out and check out the snowdrops at the 12th tee box! Last chance to sign-up and play on or before Wednesday.
On a sad note, this weekend we said goodbye to a dear friend, Letitia McArdle a founder member of Mannan, a great golfer, and a hell of a fighter. Our deepest sympathies to her family, Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam.
Mannan Castle Club News: Keep Friday February 10th free for Romance at Mannan Castle; actually it’s a Romantic/Love Quiz! Well we “love” golf so I’m sure there will be a twist to this quiz, if past quizzes have been anything to go by!
March 19th, Bank Holiday Monday Mannan Castle is hosting an Open Day, so mark your calendars and tell your friends.
Quote of the Week: “There’s an old saying,’ It’s a poor craftsman who blames his tools.' It's usually the player who misses those three-footers, not the putter." Kathy Whitworth

Photographs from the Kinder Day Presentation can be viewed in Gallery section of our Website. “Lady Captain’s versus Secretary’s Competition” was played on January 3rd, a great turnout for this matchplay event. The winners this year was our Secretary’s team. Thanks to Mary MacNamee who brought along a scrumptious pudding log and to Nuala Mulholland who brought the cream to accompany it. Captain Ann Connolly and Secretary Deanna MacGuinness would like to thank everyone who came out to show there support.
It’s time to get the rust of those clubs and sign up for the Spring League; the sign up sheet is the Ladies Noticeboard. For those of you who need a lesson before the season starts, Kevin will be back from his honeymoon next week.
CLUB NEWS Mannan Castle golfers have been able to take advantage of the milder weather and the great condition of our course over the Christmas and New Year period. We are so lucky that we have been able to play 18 holes most weeks. For those of you who haven’t ventured out to play you’ll see a few changes around the course a new path from the 2nd green up the hill to the third tee box and from the 6th tee box up the steep hill. More trees have been planted at the back of the 12th green, this will definitely dull any sounds coming from the 5th and the 13th tee boxes. I think our members would agree that our greens are in great condition. Work should begin shortly removing the fairway bunker on the 6th, I, for one will be very happy to see this sand bunker gone, no matter how hard I try this is where my ball ultimately ends up.
There was a fantastic turnout for the annual Captain versus President Competition held on December 27th this year the competition was open to ladies. Louise Hanratty and men’s handicap secretary Michael Courtney made sure everyone got out to play in a very timely manner. Official result is that the President’s Team won, this result was tallied up by a certain ex-President who will remain unnamed. Unofficially well that’s another story! Captain Shane Corr and President Sean Harvey hope that everyone enjoyed their day. Everyone was treated to delicious burgers and homemade chips cooked by our chef Owen Kearney and a very big thanks to member Graham Sweeney who donated the potatoes and even chipped the chips.
Have you collected a bounty yet? Check out the posters in the clubhouse offering a “Reward” for more information contact our professional Kevin McGivern, bar manager Finbar Boylan or membership officer Thomas Gartlan.
Quote of the Week: One of the most fascinating things about golf is how it reflects the cycle of life. No matter what you shoot - the next day you have to go back to the first tee and begin all over again and make yourself into something.~ Peter Jacobsen

Kinder Day is great way to kick start the holiday season. Thanks to all the ladies who brought appetizers, hor d’oeuvres, starters, finger food, and desserts, one thing for sure Mannan ladies are amazing cooks. Thanks to Gill who kept our glasses topped with her speciality mulled wine. Denise McGuinness brought along some of her beautiful paintings to display, one wonders how someone who plays so much golf has time to paint!

Thankfully the weather was decent enough for this year Winter League Sadie’s Team won so well done to Sadie Larkin, Mary McCabe, Siobhan Hand Imelda Hanratty and Frances Perkins. Congratulations to 2nd Place Team captained by Rita O’Loughlin, Angela McBride, Frances Byrne, Elmar Marron and Marie Conlon. In 3rd place there was a tie between Rose O’Reilly’s Team and Yvonne Duffy’s Team. Don’t forget to watch out for the sign up sheet for the Spring League!
Great to see Roisin Brady back on the links again, enjoying her break from college. Gill Rouiller also had 24pts, but alas she had 2pts deducted for a previous win.
13 Hole Competition December 4th & 7th 1st Roisin Brady (7) 24pts 2nd Angela Gartlan (24) 22pts
A great night was had by all who attended the Flower Show, over 14 floral arrangements were raffled, there’ll be no shortage of flowers in the White household this year, as Mary White, family and friends seemed to be in the winning seats. Thanks to Candy Holten for entertaining us, thanks also to those who made delicious sandwiches.
Ladies Kinder Day is Wednesday Dec 14th; ladies don’t forget to bring a wrapped prize to the value of at least €10, if you are in the mood to cook or bake, feel free to rustle up a festive dish, either savoury or sweet. Time sheet as normal, no charge to play golf, but the party starts at 5pm and don’t forget there will be a presentation of prizes. The ladies club would like to thank David Whyte from Howell’s Jewellers, 25 Main St. Carrickmacross (042) 9661545, for sponsoring a new Hilton Shield Trophy. Elmar Marron has captained the victorious Mannan Castle Intermediate Hilton Ladies Team for the last 3 years. This competition is played between Mannan Castle, Nuremore, Cavan, Virginia, Rossmore, Concra, Clones and Cabra Castle, a few years back the original shield was lost and replaced by a not so nice trophy. So Howell Jewellers is not only donating this Shield to Mannan Castle but to the ladies of all these clubs who play in this matchplay event. Ladies, don’t forget to stop into Howell’s when doing your Christmas shopping this year.
Club News: Santa Claus is coming to Mannan Castle; due to Santa’s busy schedule he has had to change the date of his visit to Mannan, he will now be visiting Mannan on Sunday 18th at 5pm, so Mannan members are invited to bring there children or grandchildren to meet Santa Claus. But of course if you can’t make it on the 18th I heard from a good source that Santa is still on schedule for the 25th. In the past the men’s club and the ladies club have had separate competitions after Christmas Captain’s versus President or Captains versus Secretary, this year we are going to try something a little different, ladies and gents are going to play together! The time sheet is now open for this fun event which will be held December 27th the time 11am, its shotgun start, so get to the club house early.
My Quote of the Week: Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot. ~ Unknown

At Mannan Castle’s recent A.G.M. held in the clubhouse both outgoing Captains Shem Whelan and Mary White spoke proudly about their year as captains of a progressive golf club in Donaghmoyne, the success of many teams in 2011, Men winning Junior Cowdy Team, Ladies had a very successful year Miele Ulster Champions, 3rd Place in Miele All Ireland, Intermediate Hilton Shield & Senior Hilton Shield and our Juniors winning the Ronan Rafferty Cup. Both outgoing captains proudly mentioned that 2011 saw the Official Opening of the new 6 hole pitch and putt area and the new chipping & putting green which hosted the first Mannan Castle Juvenile Academy.
Incoming Captain Shane Corr introduced his Vice-Captain Gerry Matthews and incoming Lady Captain Ann Connolly, who eventually after much suspense introduced her Vice-Captain Vera Kelly. Also elected was Sean Harvey as our club President for 2012.

The Thursday Open was played over 13 holes last week; I believe this was more to do with daylight hours as 18 holes were open. Thursday Open December 1st 1st Liam Gray (15) 29pts
Saturday was possibly the best day for golf this weekend, but I guess Sunday’s wet and frigid weather didn’t affect Cathal Copas or Eamon Jones’s game. Winter League Week 7 1st Cathal Copas (19) 42pts 2nd Tommy Hoey (20) 40pts 3rd Eamon Jones (20) 40pts 4th Kieran Dullaghan (17) 40pts
Great work going on out the course out there at the moment the much needed path from the 7th tee boxes up the hill to the fairway. The greens are in super condition, as are the temporary greens which thankfully have not been needed so far this season.

Mannan Castle Club News Our Professional Kevin McGivern came up with the bright idea of Night Light Golf at Mannan Castle which was held Friday Nov 25th. The golf course was filled with luminous golfers, 116 golfers in total, 29 teams all glowing, with flash lights in hand, golf balls that light up and a sense of humour set off to play golf in the dark. The tee boxes glowed, the flag poles were flashing, every team was issued with 4 golf balls that lit up when you hit them, a few dud golf balls were reported, but most teams returned to the clubhouse with at least one golf ball. A special thanks to one of our founder members, Paul Mackle who generously donated the burgers and to Frank Kelly for the burger buns, to Chef Amy assisted by mom Sheila who fed the hungry masses on return to the clubhouse, thanks to everyone who made salads. The big question is “When are we going to do this again?” Many ladies played but just didn’t feature in the prizes…but watch out next time guys!

Many of our ladies played in the Arnmore Alliance in Virginia last Monday; a great day was had by all and thanks to Virginia Golf Club for all their hospitality. Many of our ladies played super golf, especially sisters Denise and Siobhan who both featured in the prizes. 20th November 2011
There was a super turnout for the 13 hole competition last week, the weather forecast was given for a wet day last Wednesday, but the rains stayed away long enough for Mannan Ladies to get their rounds in dry. Congratulations to Angela Connolly and Yvonne Duffy both played super golf on Wednesday.
Results Weekly 13 Hole Competition 1st Angela Connolly 27pts 2nd Yvonne Duffy 27pts
Some great scores being brought in over the last few weeks in the Winter League Repeater Competition, I’m sure the handicap secretary is taking notes.
Thanks to those who were behind the move to have the Mass for our deceased members and for those who lost a loved one to be held in the clubhouse. A special thanks to Fr. Daly for agreeing to have the mass at the clubhouse, all who attended felt it was very special ceremony.
The Annual General Meeting is Monday night Nov 21st. This is supposed to be my last report, I was intending on stepping down as PRO for Mannan Castle ladies, but a few very persuasive people have asked me to run for the position again, so beware if I’m elected you could be stuck with me for another year. I invite all Mannan Castle members to what should be a very interesting AGM, as you may or may not know at an EGM recently the structure of Mannan Castle changed, so this will be the first AGM to form the new Management Committee.
Upcoming events: Night Time Golf at Mannan Castle! Finbar has been planning a night time golf event, balls that light up, will we have flash lights, runway lights, flood lights who knows! But will be revealed Friday 25th November, tee off time 7pm, but BE EARLY, it’s a shot gun start! I hear he expects all the balls back at the end of the night, I suspect Jimmy Courtney and Tom White will be fishing these luminous balls from strange places next week!
The last day of the Winter League is Wednesday December 7th, that’s also the day of the Christmas Flower Demonstration by Candy Holten, which should get us all in the mood for the Christmas Season, so mark your diaries Dec 7th 8pm Mannan Castle Clubhouse Admission €10, everyone welcome.
Do you have a copy of Rules of Golf in your bag? It’s handy to refer to it in case of a dispute. There have been a few principle changes introduced, so don’t forget to pick up your copy of updated edition of “Rules of Golf” 2012-2015 now available in the Cashell Room. Don’t just stick it in your bag and forget about it, it is recommended that you at least read Quick Guide to the Rules of Golf and the Etiquette section.
To Lady Captain Mary White it was a great golf year, your teams did well, winning two Hilton Shield Trophies, an Ulster Miele Interclub Fourball Championship, 3rd place in the All Ireland Miele Interclub Fourball, overall it was a great year and I hope you enjoyed your captaincy, you did a great job. I secretly think the highlight of Mary’s captaincy was not her Lady Captain’s Day (which was a great day); not how well the teams did with her support, but I suspect it was winning the painting by our resident artist Denise Mc Guinness in Ballymac. Now, onto the best kept secret in Mannan Castle is who is going to be the next Lady Vice Captain? This will be announced by our incoming Lady Captain Ann Connolly Monday night at the AGM. I would just like to wish incoming Captain Shane Corr and incoming Lady Captain Ann Connolly a great year ahead.
My Quote of the Week is “Keep your sense of humor. There's enough stress in the rest of your life, not to let bad shots ruin a game you're supposed to enjoy.” ~ Amy Alcott

Can you believe that we are into week 3 of the Winter League already? A few teams have got off to a good start, but the leader board can change very quickly, as the league is played over seven weeks and the top scores count from six weeks.
Some fantastic scores were brought in this week in our weekly competition. I have to share that I overheard the captain of our very successful Miele Team saying “They’re my girls”. Keep those scores coming in and I guess you’ll pretty much guarantee your place on next years Miele Team. 13 Hole Competition Results Sun. 6th Nov / Wed. 9th Nov 1st Jo Morris 29pts 2nd Mary MacNamee 28pts
It was great to see so many young faces in attendance at the Quiz Friday night in aid of the Juvenile Club. A big thanks to everyone who helped make the night a success, to Sheila Boylan for all the work she did behind the scenes, now if we could only get her to play golf! Thanks to Quiz Master for the night Dick Bourke and to Dermot Finnegan (Sheila’s brother) who set the questions. Congratulations to the winning table, Louise Hanratty, Roisin Brady, and Eimear McMahon and lastly we have to thank Brendan Larney for sponsoring the prizes.

Mannan ladies enjoyed their Lady Captain’s Outing to Ballymac, last Thursday Nov 3rd a great day was had by all, okay we got a little bit wet, but the rain stayed away for most of the day, a few ladies who couldn’t get off work even joined us for the meal and prize giving. 30th October 2011
A great night was had at the Halloween End of Year Bash at Mannan Castle, a delicious buffet of food served by our chef Owen Kearney and his staff, a super fireworks display, although slow to start was beautiful to watch, we were then entertained by local comedian Michael Downey, Michael was very entertaining, some were barely able to sit still with all their laughter, isn’t it wonderful to have such talent locally. Anthony there was really no need for you to hide in the Cashell room.
A few presentations were made, firstly to the winners of the fancy dress, who were witches Philomena Rogers and Rosemary Barry; they also received a presentation by the Miele Team on a job well done on finishing 3rd Place in the All Ireland Inter Club Miele Fourball Matchplay.
Then the men’s winning Junior Cowdy team was presented with Mannan Castle ties and the proud team captain Martin Donaghy accepted the Junior Cowdy pendant. Presentations were made by Captain Shem Whelan to the winner of the Men’s Golfer of the Year Mark Lambe, David Hanratty proudly accepted the trophy on Mark’s behalf. Thomas Gartlan was presented with his monthly (Oct) medal. Presentations were made to the Men’s Single Club Matchplay Winner Dowcan Sowter and Fourball Matchplay winners Shane Corr and Andrew Boylan, apologies were sent by Andrew Boylan as he was performing in a play in Dundalk.
DJ Doc Brennan kept the music going into the wee hours of the morning, although I don’t remember seeing one man on the dance floor all night and a big thanks to Jimmy McCahey who made sure everyone got home safe and sound.
Amazingly after all the rain last week, Mannan Castle was only closed one day last week; this is a credit to the great work that was done over the years with drainage on the course. The course is amazing condition at the moment, thanks to Donal and his wonderful staff.

Mannan Castle claim 3rd place in the Miele All Ireland Fourball Championship. All roads led to Kilkenny where Mannan Castle Ladies played against Faithlegg in the Miele All Ireland Fourball Championship, the teams tied the matches two and two in the Semi-Final against Faithlegg, but Mannan lost by 4 holes. But our girls can come home with their heads high as they went out fighting on Sunday for 3rd place against Mountbellow and once again the matches tied, but our girls secured 3rd place by a two hole margin. Thank-you to all the supporters who went to Kilkenny to cheer on our girls. Congratulations to our girls on making it to the Semi-Final, quite an achievement for our club. Not enough ladies played last Wednesday for there to be a competition as weather conditions were horrendous, but I should mention that four brave women did not let the wind nor the rains stop them from playing their round.

Mannan Castle defeats Killymoon at Mannan Castle to win the Miele Interclub Fourball Northern Regional Final. Monday September 5th was a great day to be at Mannan Castle, as we hosted the Miele Interclub Fourball Northern & Western Finals. I don’t think anyone went to work that day, as it seemed like all of Mannan’s members and indeed a few golfers from neighbouring clubs and not so neighbouring clubs were out supporting our ladies who had a brilliant 3 to 1 win against a strong Killymoon team. We are very proud of our Miele team which is compiled of Gill Rouiller, Jo Morris, Karen Forrester, Louise Hanratty, Mary Cassidy, Mary MacNamee, Mena Marquis, Rita O’Loughlin, Rose O’Reilly, and Roisin Brady, but I’d say none more proud of them than team captain Rosemary Barry. 14th August 2011
Last week was all about our Lady Captain Mary White and what a week it was! I should explain that our Lady Captains Day competition was held over two days and the format was stableford. Lady Captain Mary organized everything down to the minutest detail, now we can’t blame our captain for the inclement weather on Wednesday, one would expect that scheduling her captain’s day in August you’d guarantee blue skies and sunshine, but alas this was not the case. However the weather didn’t affect our ladies as the scoring was fantastic on day one. Leading the field on Wednesday was Elmar Marron, who had a great score of 43pts.
Saturday on arrival we were greeted to Bucks Fizz/Mimosa’s served by Mary’s beautiful daughter Helen, goodie bags, scattered showers and patches of sunshine. What a stunning array of prizes, beautifully displayed for those lucky enough to be in the winning circle. The meal served by our own caterers Owen Kearney and his staff was delicious; followed by scrumptious desserts created by our very own Lady Captain and daughter Helen. Music was provided by our very own DJ Peter Marquis. The happiest lady in Mannan Castle on Saturday night was Carol McMahon who finished with best score over both days. (Photos now in the Gallery Section)
Results for 2 Days /36 holes scores 1st Carol McMahon 80pts 2nd Teresa Butler 77pts 3rd Jo Morris 76 pts
Gross: Roisin Brady Cat 1 (0-21): Mary McNamee Cat 2 (22-29): Nuala Mulholland Cat 3 (30-36): Siobhan Downey Day 1: Elmar Marron Day 2: Marie Sweeney Committee: Gill Rouiller Past Captains: Philomena Rogers 1st Nine Holes: Frances Byrne 2nd Nine Holes: Angela Connolly Amen Corner: Kathleen Fox Visitors Prize: Mollie Mulvaney
There was a great turnout for both days of the competition and it was great that some of our old friends joined us for the meal and entertainment. A few people were unable to attend either due to illness or family functions, Mary thanks all that sent good wishes to her. Lady Captain Mary would like to thank everyone who made her Captains’ day so wonderful, but I think you’ll all agree that Mary has been a wonderful captain.
Just a reminder to all who played... the handicap secretary was also very busy last week, so check your handicaps before your next competition.
This week’s competition is The PGA Tankard Qualifier (Stableford) sponsored by Carrick Pharmacy, the following week’s competition is Mail on Sunday Fourball so start organizing your partners for this event. The Charity BBQ is Friday 26th this event shall be used to raise money for a defibrillator for the club.

All eyes this week were on the Ladies Irish Open, and as I mentioned last week Louise Hanratty, Karen Forrester & Siobhan Hand qualified to play in the Pro-Am at Killeen Castle on Thursday August 4th. Congratulations to our girls as they featured in the prizes with help of their professional team-mate Minea 'Minnie' Blomqvist, they finished in 3rd place, considering that the teams in 1st & 2nd place had men on them I think our girls did absolutely fantastic. I’m sure Karen & Louise would have like to have stayed to watch the rest of the Irish Open in VIP style but they had to head to join their teammates in Woodbrook Co.Wicklow
The Senior Foursomes’ Team captained by Philomena Rogers did us proud; they beat Carrickmines on Saturday August 6th in Woodbrook and had to stay overnight to play a match against Dun Laoghaire Sunday morning at 9am, but alas our girls were beaten in the semi-finals Sunday morning. Congratulations to the Senior Foursome Team who were Gill Rouiller, Roisin Brady, Louise Hanratty, Karen Forrester, Ann Carragher & Margaret Carroll for getting to the semi-finals.
Next week is our Lady Captains Day, played over two days Wednesday and Saturday. It’s not to late to put you name down, the evening draw on Wednesday will be at 5pm as the evenings are getting shorter. I would just like to wish our Lady Captain Mary White a great weekend, and I hope that the sun shines on the fairways of Mannan Castle for Captains Day.

As Concra Woods was the host club for the Hilton Shield this year, Lady Captain Eileen Kerr from Concra Woods -Castleblaney Golf Club travelled to Virginia for the final and was there to present the Shield and beautiful prizes to both teams.

Mannan Castle was a busy spot on Monday June 27th, with two Hilton Shield Team matches. Intermediate Team captain Elmar Marron and Senior Team captain Mena Marquis were thrilled with the results of the Hilton Shield home matches; both teams won at home 4:1, against Virginia & Rossmore respectively a great result. Although neither captain is foolish enough to count their chickens before they are hatched, good luck to both teams in the away matches. The senior ladies had a beautiful morning for their competition which was won by our lady captain and the runner up was none other than our vice captain.

Fifty (50) great prizes from green fees to vouchers for local restaurants, vouchers for golf lessons, a few pieces of crystal and giftware, to paintings by local artists including Jean Clarke, our cook extraordinaire and by member Denise McGuinness. It is worth noting that this is Louise’s second PRO-AM as she was on a team that qualified for this event two years ago,
previously called the Ladies Irish Open Club Challenge. Congratulations to all of you.

What a windy week to play golf! Congratulations to our very own Louise Hanratty who played last weekend in Carlow in the Lancome Amateur Close Championship, Louise finished in the top 48 to qualify to play Monday's matchplay for the Ita Wallace Plate in the 100kph winds, it was a very close match, but alas it was not Louise's day. The Minor Inter Club Team (23-29) captained by Mary Cumiskey played in Navan against a strong Balbriggan Team and the elements. All matches went to the 18th and some went a lot further, it was tough to stand up on Monday never mind play golf, but Mannan made it through to the 3rd round. A word of thanks to the great caddies, Mena Marquis, Philomena Rogers, Esther Durkin, Marie McKenna and Rita Garland who supported the team in the horrendous weather conditions. Good luck to our ladies in the next match which will be played in Hollystown on June 20th against either Ashbourne or Dundalk, who have yet to play their 2nd round matches; I suspect their matches were cancelled due to severe weather conditions!!
Wednesday brought more wind and heavy showers, but a mild day after Monday... proving no bother to Philomena Rogers scoring a spectacular 40pts in tough conditions. I guess caddying in Monday's nasty weather stood to Philomena as she ran away with last week's competition.

A good group of ladies teamed together to play the qualifier of the Breffni Shield and indeed it was left to the very last group to get winners. Congratulations to Imelda Hanratty and Mary McCabe who came in with a great score of 66.8. Runners up came from the Sunday group, Rita O'Loughlin and Eilish Crawley with a score of 69.8. Great to see such good scores.
Our big news this weeks involves Roisin Brady who is now playing off 6.5 who was invited late on in the week to compete in the under 18's Irish Open Championships which took place in Knightsbrook. Fielding two scores of 79 and 81 yesterday allowed her to qualify for todays final. The field was extremely tough with competitors from all over Europe including our own Maguire Twins from Slieve Russell. Most of the other girls were on plus handicaps, Roisin had the highest handicap in the field however this is acedemic as everyone plays off scratch in these competitions. Her playing partners today were from Norway and Sweden and played of + 2 and + 3 respectively. Unfortunately it was not to be today for Roisin, however congratulations on reaching the finals and competing with such an impressive field. We ladies in Mannan are very proud of you and congratulate you on your achievment this weekend.
This week we have the much anticipated Flower Show on Thursday 13th April with popular demonstrator Veronica McMahon. We are looking forward to a great evening and would urge as many of you as possible to come, and bring your friends. However tickets are selling fast so contact any of the Committee or the Clubhouse for details. As this is one of our main fundraisers over the year, we do appreciate your support.
This week's competition is our first 18 hole stroke of the season. Hopefully the wonderful weather we have been enjoying will last until Wednesday at least. And on that note there is good news for the ladies, the clubhouse and kitchen will be open from this Wednesday onwards.
This week also sees the beginning of the 'Rings' 2011. This popular competition is played alongside our regular weekly competitions and is great fun. E5 to enter and we can ring all or as many of our good scores on our scorecard each week after the weekly competition. These are entered on a Mastersheet and at the end of the season, the people who have carded the best 18 holes of the season in each of three categories will win. All the details are on the noticeboard in the locker-room.
Finally this week we have two very important Interclub matches taking place. Both on Monday morning. The Intermediate Cup (Handicaps 16 to 22) team are playing against Hollywood Lakes in Swords and the Junior Cup (8 to 14) will be played in Hollywood Lakes against Ardee. We would like to wish both these teams the very best of luck in these competitions.
4th April 2011
We are now well into the 18 hole season, and lots of our ladies are coming out for the competitions and taking advantage of the lovely weather. The competition on Wednesday 30th March was sponsored by Ronnell Sunglasses. Ronnie McNeill came to display his magnificent range of eyeware, both sunglasses and frames for ordinary glasses. He also has a very nice range of 'ready to go' reading glasses.. Thank you Ronnie for your continued sponsorship, much appreciated.
Karen Forrester took the first prize with 34 points, second Margaret Bourke and third Bridie Fitzmaurice also with 34 points. All are looking forward to sporting the new shades soon. Go Karen, 2 weeks in a row. Great preparation for the match next week.
At this stage I would like to extend our thanks and congratulations to Donal and his staff on how well the course and greens are playing. A lot of hard work over the winter months has certainly paid off.
Last weekend saw the start of the Interclub Competitions with our Junior Foursomes playing away to Laytown/Bettystown. Our ladies did really well to win one match outright and while losing the other two are equal in holes. This is a great achievement and we look forward to the return match on April 19th in Mannan. Please come to this match to support our ladies, as this is much appreciated and very welcome.
The next Interclub matches will be played on Monday 11th April, when two of our teams are playing. More details next week, in any event wishing all the ladies involved the best of luck. Also good luck to Rita O'Loughlin and Marie Sweeney who are playing in their qualifyer of the Mail on Sunday competition. Rita and Marie teamed up last year and won the club competition to go forward to this round. They are playing at home to Royal County Down on Wednesday next.
Our long awaited flower arrangement demonstration, hosted by the very popular Veronica McMahon is being held on Thursday 14th April in Mannan Castle. Veronica was due to host her show at Christmas but had to cancel due to the snow. The show is themed 'MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS' and is sure to cause a stir with the beautiful spring flowers in bloom at the moment. Make sure to book early as Veronica traditionally draws a great crowd.
Next week's competition is the qualifier for the Breffni Shield, make sure to check that you have opposition before you come out. We hope at this stage that all are finding the BRS system easy to manage. Any problems, please contact any of the committee.
27th March 2011
This is the second week of our 18 hole competitions and already good scores are coming in. Karen Forrester came first with a great score of 39 points, Karen you are really heading for single figures with these great scores; Rita O'Loughlin in the winners enclosure again, coming second with 36 points, just beating Nuala Mulhollandinto third place on the breakdown.
Next week's competition will be sponsored by our good friend Ronnie McNeill at Ronnell Sunglasses. Our winners will have their shades in good time for the sunny weather to come. Our ladies nearly made a clean sweep at the home fixture of the Arnmore Alliance which was held last Monday. Angela Gartlan brought in a fantastic 41 points, and came first, followed in second place by Nuala Mulholland with 36. Gill Rouliller won her category with 35 points and Brionan Kingham, a newby to the Alliance, won her category with 30 points. And finally from the Mannan Ladies, Philomena Rogers won the back 9. Well done to you all.
This week sees the beginning of the ILGU Inter Club Competitions. Our first outing was the Junior Foursomes, away against Laytown Bettystown and well done to you all, we have won one match, lost two but are equal in holes. The return match will be held in Mannan on 19th April and we urge you all to come out and support our teams. Your support will be gratefully appreciated.
We are delighted to tell you all that the postponed Christmas Flower Show, hosted by the very popular Knockbridge lady, Veronica McMahon, is to be held on 15th April next and the tickets are available at the clubhouse or from Committee members. As Veronica traditionally draws a large crowd, it would be advisable to get your tickets early.
Sadly this week, news came through that Jim Donaghy, brother of Rosemary Barry, passed away. We would like to extend our sympathies to Rosemary and her family on this sad loss. Also the lady's club would like to extend our sympathies to Anthony Downey, last years Captain, on the death of his father. May they rest in peace.

13th March 2011
The last 13 hole competition was won by Karen Forrester with 29 points which is a good score any day, but impressive given that Karen played Sunday in the rain. Karen plays of 12, but would be happy to see her handicap reduced to single digits, with seven pars and a birdie on last Sunday's card she should reach her goal this season. Carol McMahon was second with 24pts; this was Carol's first competition of the year, not a bad season debut!
Results of Week 7 of 13 Hole Competition Karen Forrester (12) 29pts Carol Mc Mahon (34) 24pts

6th March 2011
Due to a frost delay Wednesday morning ladies had plenty of time to check out and model the stylish golf clothes in the Pro-shop; Mannan ladies will definitely look glamorous on the fairways this year! It's one thing to look good on the golf course, but Kevin McGivern our professional wants to ensure that we can also hit the ball, so if you are a paid up member don't forget that you can avail of a free bucket of balls and Kevin will have look at your swing between 2pm and 6pm every Friday for the month of March.
The 3rd hole was closed due to frost on Wednesday, so our competition this week was played over12 holes, congratulations to the winners.

27th February 2011
On Monday, twelve Mannan ladies headed to Headfort Golf Club to play in the Arnmore Alliance, thankfully Met Eireann got the forecast wrong and we enjoyed glorious sunshine. Mannan Winners at Headfort: Jo Morris (23) 3rd place overall with 39pts, Nuala Mulholland (28) won her category with 38pts and Denise Mc Guinness (36) won her category with 35pts. Our weekly 13 hole competition was won by 36 handicapper Denise Mc Guinness; finishing her round with a par on the 13th hole for 4 points. Denise is playing super golf these days; I predict she will be playing off a lower handicap very soon. Results Week 5 of 13 Hole Weekly Competition. 1st Denise Mc Guinness (36) 27pts 2nd Jo Morris(23) 25pts
Roisin Brady has been selected to play on the Leinster U-18 Inter Provisional Girls team; I'll keep you posted throughout the year. The new 18 hole putting green opened this weekend just in time for our Captains Drive-In, a great addition to the pitching area. Mannan Ladies have no excuse not to hone their putting skills, just ask any good golfers and they will tell you how important the putts are.....Drive for show, putt for dough!
This weekend was all about our Captain's Drive-In.... A chilly Sunday morning although one can't complain as the sun shone brightly and the sky was blue whilst our Captain Seamus Whelan and Lady Captain Mary White arrived to the Clubhouse riding two fine looking motor bikes. Our Captains looked mighty cool arriving clad in biker gear to a champagne and strawberry reception, after a quick photo shoot, they quickly changed into their golf attire and were ready for action. Quite a large crowd gathered at Mannan Castle to witness the first drives of our 2011 Captains, no nerves with these guys Captain Shem hit a superb tee shots at least 250 yards down the fairway. Lady Captain Mary not to be undone kept her head down and hit a mighty fine drive straight down the middle of the fairway. Well done guys, everyone at Mannan Castle wishes you a great year ahead. For those of us who played in the scramble over the weekend, most of us got play golf in all the elements glorious sunshine, scattered showers, pouring rain, gale force wind and hailstones. Many magnificent rainbows appeared over the fairways of Mannan during the scramble on both days, a sign of a good year ahead! Unfortunately, there were no ladies in the winning enclosure, but congratulations to the winning teams.
The results of the Scramble are as follows: 1st Place Team with 57.6 pts. Damien Savage (12) Martin O'Brien (17) Denis Mc Ardle (19) Graham Etherington (16)
2nd Place Team with 57.8 pts. (Won on the breakdown) Brendan Morris (22) John Clarke (18) Gerry Kellet (23) Jim O'Reilly (19)
3rd Place Team with 57.8 pts Tommy Burke (13) Peter Marron (17) Tommy O'Brien (14) John O'Flaherty (18)

20th February 2011
Last Wednesday's competition brought Mannan ladies out in full force! Mena Marquis has been playing very steady golf over the last few weeks, but just not good enough to beat our new handicap secretary. For those of you like myself who need to work on their game, don't forget that the driving range is still free to members who took advantage of the 'prompt payment deal' and Kevin our Professional is available for lessons.
Week 3 of 13 Hole Weekly Competition: 1st Rosemary Barry 27pts 2nd Mena Marquis 25pts
The Ladies Spring League is now in full swing, five teams battling for 1st place; Rita O'Loughlin's Team is leading at the minute, but Mary MacNamee's team is in hot pursuit, a little birdie told me that Sadie Larkin's team, Mena Marquis's team and Rose Reilly's team are playing great golf at the moment, so a lot can happen over the next few weeks. No matter who wins, it's really great to see so many ladies out playing everyday.
But the big question this week is:....... How will Captain Seamus Whelan and Lady Captain Mary White arrive to Mannan Castle Golf Club for the Captain's Drive-In on Sunday 27th February at noon?? We'll just have to wait and see!
Make sure you have your name on the time sheet for this Weekends 'Captain's Drive-In' Competition held over Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th February. The format is a Scramble, this event is usually a lot of fun and a great kick off to the golf year.
No better way to start the month of March and get us ready for St. Patrick's Day than with A Traditional Concert of Music, Dance, Song & Storytelling, join us at Mannan Castle Clubhouse Friday 4th March @ 8 pm sharp.
Tickets available at the pro-shop or from a committee member, tickets will also be available at the door.

6th February 2011
Last Wednesday was overcast with scattered showers or to put it bluntly it rained all day and the few golfers who ventured out got soaked, but the course is in fabulous condition. I had the pleasure of witnessing Lady Captain Mary White sink a 20 foot putt on the third hole for her first birdie of the year.
Winner of Week 1 of the 13 Hole Weekly Competition 1st Angela Gartlan 19pts
Spring League has started; teams will be picked in the next few days, so if you have not already signed up for Spring League you can sign up in the pro-shop or on the sign up sheet on the ladies notice board.
A reminder that the weekly Thursday Open is open to all golfers, this is a great way to get ready for the 18 hole competitions.
Ladies don't forget to check out the great range of stylish golf clothing and golf clubs and in the Pro Shop.

30th January 2011
The Spring League has started, it's officially time to wipe the dust of the golf clubs and hit the fairways of Mannan Castle! The teams are being selected next week, so there is still time to sign up.
Well done to the ladies who headed to Seapoint Golf Club last Monday for the Senior Alliance, ours girls did not to come home empty handed; congratulations to Gill Rouiller 2nd place and Rita O'Loughlin 3rd place.
Wednesday's competition was a 13 hole Sweep, a good turnout for this competition. Congratulations to the winner Denise Mc Guinness who spent the "off season" practicing her game. If Denise is not playing the course she can be found taking advantage of the practice pitching area, perhaps more of us should take a leaf out of her book.
1st Denise McGuinness 22pts 2nd Mena Marquis 21pts
There was a Table Quiz held in Mannan last Friday night, eleven tables participated in total and funds raised will go towards the Junior Club. Congratulations to Siobhan Downey for leading her table to victory, other members of the winning team were Anthony Downey, George Farrelly and Tom Kevin.

23rd January 2011
Six brave ladies from Mannan Castle headed to the hills of Clones last Monday morning to play in the Arnmore Alliance, congratulations to Gill Rouiller on winning the front nine. More of us now wished we had joined them as temperatures plummeted and the freezing temperatures led to the closing of the course this week.
Hopefully, the temperatures will rise and we can get started with our Spring League and weekly 13 hole competition this week. It's not too late to put your name down for the Spring League; the signup sheet is on the Ladies Noticeboard, the teams will be selected next week.
The Thursday Open has started again, for those of you want to play 18 holes.
A reminder to the ladies, that the driving range is free during day light hours for all paid up members. Also, Kevin our professional is offering group lessons to beginner ladies at very reasonable rates; golf clubs can even be provided and you don't have to be a member of Mannan Castle to avail of these lessons.
My quote of the week from the great Bob Hope: "If you watch a game, it's fun. If you play it, it's recreation. If you work at it, it's golf."
10th January 2011
First competition of 2011 was a fun team event, Captain versus Secretary. Lady Captain Mary White and Secretary Gill Rouiller were there to greet golfers and select teams on a beautiful Monday morning. Congratulations to the victorious Secretary's Team.
Sign up sheet for this years' Spring League is up on the Ladies Notice board. The Spring League starts Wednesday January 26th so ladies you have just two weeks to get the cobwebs or the icicles off the clubs and plenty of time to hit the driving range and work your swing.
Happy New Year to all our members and sponsors.
May I suggest a golfer's diet to all this year: Live on greens as much as possible!
19th December 2010

Incoming Lady Captain Mary White accepted the Singles Matchplay prize and told us how grateful she was to have a "Major" at Mannan Castle, Mary also reminded us of how she was not a competitive person. (Yeah right!)
The mulled wine was flowing, thank-you Gill and Rosemary and to all who cooked and baked the Christmas hors d'oeuvres and goodies, they were delicious. Mena Marquis ended our night with a humorous rendition explaining how her handicap dropped from 24 to 18 this year.
Last note of 2010 is that the Secretary versus Captain's Competition has been rescheduled to Jan 3rd 2011 at 10am

This years winner of the Silver Medal was Mary MacNamee; and Mena Marquis was the winner of the Bronze Medal; both of these fine golfers kept their heads down for the stroke competitions. The Silver Medal Competition was held at The Hermitage Golf Club and the Bronze Medal Competition was in Luttrellstown Golf Club on Monday October 11th; the time sheet filled up very quickly for both these events, but thankfully both of our girls got to represent Mannan Castle, both played well and had a great day.
Mary MacNamee was also the winner of the Silver Spoon, so no shortage of silverware in the MacNamee household!
Congratulations to our neighbouring club Nuremore on winning the Millennium Cup, which was hosted by Nuremore Golf Club Thursday Oct 15th. The Mannan Castle Team totally enjoyed our day and we gave the home team a run for the Cup!
Congratulations to Angela McBride who was the winner of the first weekly 13 hole competition.

The Senior Alliance was played in Mannan last week, a great turnout considering it was the final day for the Ryder Cup. Congratulations Gill Rouiller who came 2nd overall.

3rd October 2010
The Singles Matchplay Championship Final was played on Monday last; Vice Captain Mary White kept her head down and beat Rita O'Loughlin on the 18th hole. Well done to both of you for making it to the final, a close match by all accounts. But Mary will be the one taking home the Canon McGreevy Cup.
Rose O'Reilly was in top form on Wednesday for The Professionals Prize, she played a tremendous round of golf finishing with a great score of 62. No doubt that Rose will have no problem playing of her new handicap of 21, after losing 3 shots. (Ouch!) Mary MacNamee was in close pursuit with 65, Mary has been trying very hard to lower her handicap, so she can play in the Senior Alliance with all the "good" golfers and Karen Forrester is well on the way to achieving her ambition to get down to single digits after had a round of 67, Karen's new handicap is now 12. 1st Rose O'Reilly (24) 62 2nd Mary MacNamee (18) 65 3rd Karen Forrester (13) 67
Our Lady Captains Day Away was Thursday Sept 30th; a most enjoyable day was had by all at The Ballymascanlon Hotel & Country Club. I, for one enjoyed the scenic views of the beautiful Cooley Peninsula, the company and the delicious food. Nuala Mulholland played a great round of golf bringing in 41 points; Louise Hanratty & Cepta Maddick both had 40 pts, great scores. Thanks to everyone involved in organizing the day, a very successful day by all accounts.
Other presentations where made by Lady Captain Margaret Bourke to prize winners from earlier competitions. The RoseBowl sponsored by Gerry & Kathleen Cumiskey was presented to Siobhan Hand, runners up Frances Byrne & Mary McCabe received smaller Crystal Bowls. The Hairdressers Prize was presented to Bridie Fitzmaurice. The Neil J Haughey Trophy and a beautiful hamper from Mc Guire's Pharmacy were presented to Esther Durkin. Lousie Hanratty received a beautiful hamper sponsored by Carrick Pharmacy. Thank you again to all our sponsors for their generous prizes; we encourage our members to support our sponsors.
I think that happiest lady leaving the Ballymac was Philomena Rogers who was the lucky winner of a painting by gifted artist Denise Mc Guinness, the beautiful painting was raffled after dinner, and the funds raised will go towards a charity close to our hearts at Mannan Castle – National Breast Cancer Research.
Mannan Castle is host to the Senior Lady's Alliance on Monday, so the tee box is booked from 9:30 to 12am. Good luck to all playing in this event.

5th September 2010
A great turnout for the Gerry Cumiskey Classic, almost 80 teams played over the three days, the winning team was Thomas Gartlan and Angela Gartlan, John Gartlan Junior and Angela Connolly. A birdie on the first hole by Angela Connolly, gave this team a great start to the round. I have a sneaky suspicion that based on the selection of prizes that perhaps, it was not expected to have women on the winning team.
Second place team, of Rosemary Barry, Gill Rouiller, Eddie Rouiller & Rita Cunningham had a tremendous back nine score of 53 points.
Thomas Cunningham represented Gerry Cumiskey at the presentation Sunday night. I, for one was disappointed to see that shining Volkswagen Cars on display over the weekend, disappeared before the presentation of prizes, I guess the winning team will have to be satisfied with getting their names on the Gerry Cumiskey “Hubcap” Trophy. A word of thanks to our generous sponsors, your sponsorship is appreciated.
- 1st Place team 98pts (50/48)
- Thomas Gartlan
- Angela Gartlan
- John Gartlan (Jnr.)
- Angela Connolly
- 2nd Place Team 97pts (44/53)
- Rosemary Barry
- Gill Rouiller
- Eddie Rouiller
- Rita Cunningham
- 3rd Place Team 97pts (50/47)
- John Caldwell
- Padraig Sharkey
- Gerry Gorham
- Gregory McCaughey
A little birdie told me that Bridie Dooley had a great win at the All Ireland Vintners Society at the Slieve Russell on Wednesday, well done Bridie.
This week’s competition is Stroke (M) and is sponsored by our Professional Kevin McGivern; ladies don’t forget to check out the great selection of clothes and clubs in the Pro-shop.

The ladies club would just like to sympathize with Teresa Butler on the death of her father in law Paddy Butler, Ar Dheis De go raibh anam.
