Mannan Castle Men’s Club 2012
Dear Members
It’s a huge honour for me personally to be the men’s captain of Mannan Castle Golf Club for 2012 & I would like to again thank last year’s captain Seamus Whelan for nominating me.
As you may know, the club’s organisational structure has changed in a number of significant areas since last year and I thought it sensible to outline these changes as to how it will affect the men’s club and also how it is proposed to run the club in 2012. I am personally completely supportive of these changes which will help strengthen and improve the club as a whole.
Function of the Men’s Club My role (along with that of the lady captain Ann Connolly) is/are to be the official representatives of the club. The role of the men’s club is now confined to running the men’s weekend competitions, organising the various inter-club team competitions and maintaining accurate handicaps of all male members. Other aspects of the running of the golf club are delegated elsewhere.
My committee for this year is:
Gerry Matthews (Vice Captain) Michael Courtney (Handicap Secretary) Jim Hanratty (Team Convenor) George Farrelly Finbar Boylan
I would ask that if any member has any issue or concern regarding any aspect of the men’s club during the year that they would initially contact my vice captain Gerry (086-2611010) so that it can be brought to the attention of the committee as a whole. It’s hoped that any such issues would be dealt with in a speedy manner.
Captains Prize 2012 This year’s event will be a 36 hole stableford competition held on the Saturday/Sunday of the August bank holiday weekend (August 4th & 5th) with 18 holes on each day. This format proved to be both very successful & popular in 2011 and I hope the long notice period will help attract a large turnout. There will be prizes for each day as well as overall and all membership categories are strongly encouraged to play. First prize (only) is confined to full members (adult or student) who have played a minimum of 4 men’s weekend competitions since last year’s event.
Competition Entry It’s expected from March of this year (& hopefully sooner) that there will be a computer terminal in the professional’s shop and all members will thereafter be required to formally enter competitions prior to playing. The men’s committee will be adopting a “zero tolerance” approach to members who don’t subsequently hand in their cards/score as, by not doing this; it can have the effect of altering the standard scratch and ultimately the handicaps of other players.
Competition Entry Fees Those of you who have played in the Winter League are aware that the price of entry was set at €5 and has proven both very popular and successful. The men’s committee have decided that the Spring voucher competitions will also have a €5 entry fee and we hope that members will continue to support these competitions at a time when the course may sometimes not be at its best.
From the beginning of March, the weekend entry fee will be €6. This is a reduction of €1 from last year. Members should be aware that €2 of every entry fee goes to the Management Committee to help with the overall running of the golf club with the remainder going to the men’s club to pay for prizes and the running of team competitions. As a committee, we feel it is vital, more than ever, to give members value for money and hence our decision to reduce these fees. The reductions are being funded through lowering the costs of the men’s club and also in the expectation that it may help attract more players to play in our competitions. It may be that there could be scope for further reductions at a later date.
It’s important for members to realise that these fees will not apply to entry for the Captains prize or for a number of weekend competitions which are run as club fundraisers e.g. the Club Classic, Open Week & 50 prize event. Again, I would strongly encourage members to support these competitions as they are vital for the running of the overall club.
As you are aware, our club professional Kevin McGivern runs a “2’s” competition every weekend. This is popular with most members and is run separately from the men’s competition. Entry is not compulsory and is entirely at the discretion of each player. A number of suggestions have been made to both myself & other Committee Members as to how “the two’s” format might be tweaked/altered. We would recommend that these ideas be taken up directly with Kevin for his consideration.
Golfer of the Year One of my specific hopes for this year is to increase the number of players competing in the weekend competition. To this end, we will be revamping the golfer of the year competition with points awarded for each men’s weekend competition from the beginning of March to the end of September with significant prizes for overall winners. More details will be revealed closer to the time.
Team Golf Once again the club has entered a variety of team competitions in 2012. Please find the list of team captains and handicap ranges below. I would like to express my gratitude to each captain for taking on their role and wish each team every success. I would personally request people, in all handicap ranges, who haven’t represented the club before and who are interested in doing so to make themselves known to myself, Finbar in the clubhouse or Jim Hanratty our team convenor.
