1st February 2010 Mannan Castle Golf Club Newsletter HAPPY NEW YEAR ! The course was closed over the Christmas period because of the freezing conditions, but in the last few weeks with the rise in temperatures the course was open for nine hole competitions. All players remarked on the good condition of the course after all the snow and frost. Unfortunately, only casual golf was played on Sunday 31 January 2010 again because of the frosty conditions. The weather for the coming week looks pretty good. So here’s hoping. Spring League This competition starts shortly. Simply enter your name in the Competition Book at the bar, pay your €4 entry fee and away you go. You can enter as often as you like. ...

The frost did not deter the Mannan Castle ladies who were out in force in both Virginia & Dundalk. The Arnmore Alliance was held in the picturesque Virginia Golf Club, where we were welcomed by a fabulous spread of homemade goodies made by the Virginia Ladies. Mary MacNamee was the overall winner; Philomena Rogers, Angela Gartlan & Frances Byrne each won their category. The Senior Alliance was held in Dundalk where again Mannan Castle ladies did very well. Ann Carraher won 1st place and Rita O’Loughlan 4th place. Congratulations to all our winners. The first weekly competition of the Spring League was won by Frances Byrne, in 2nd place was Gill Rouiller. Well done ladies. The Sunday competition was cancelled because of frost and overnight snow. 20 played on Saturday in a nine-hole competition on temporary greens. One prize was decided on with it going to John Hughes who had a score of 22 pts.

The table quiz last night was a great success. Thanks to all the 25 teams that took part. John Simpson's team took first spot. They answered 95 out of 100 questions correctly. Second was last year's winners The Lady Captain's team.
